Ophthalmology

What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system. The eye, its surrounding structures and the visual system can be affected by a number of clinical conditions.

Ophthalmology involves diagnosis and therapy of such conditions, along with microsurgery.

Our Ophthalmic department

The Ophthalmic Department at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital covers a wide range of Ophthalmology Services, from general Ophthalmology to several sub-speciality services.

The majority of our Outpatient services are provided within our facilities at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn. An additional satellite service is held within Outpatients at North Cambridgeshire Hospital, Wisbech. A Low Vision service is also held at Fakenham Medical Practice.

A dedicated Ophthalmic theatre is operational within the Arthur Levin Day Surgery Centre at QEH, providing care for patients undergoing Day Case Ophthalmic procedures under local or general anaesthetic.

Additional treatment room facilities are also available within Day Surgery, QEH Outpatients and North Cambridgeshire Hospital Outpatients; these areas largely support our Medical Retina Service, allowing patient treatment of sight threatening conditions.

The Ophthalmology team are highly qualified, dedicated professionals with a vast amount of experience in their respective fields.

Our Consultant Ophthalmologists are supported by Associate Specialist and Staff Grade Doctors to deliver general Ophthalmology and sub-specialty services including Glaucoma, Medical Retina, Vitreo-retinal, Paediatrics and Ocular Plastics.
An experienced, committed team of Nurses and Allied Health Professionals including Specialist nurses, Orthoptists and Optometrists/Opticians also support clinics within the department.
