Rheumatology

Our Rheumatology department

Our Rheumatology multi-disciplinary team is in Emerson Unit made up of two consultants, one specialist and their personal assistants, specialist nurses, nursing auxiliaries, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, a therapy assistant and rehabilitation clerical support.

Services:

The team run out-patient based clinics, services offered include:

  • An early arthritis clinic and rehabilitation pathway of care
  • Spondylitis clinics
  • Osteoporosis clinic
  • GCA fast tract clinic
  • A multidisciplinary team annual review
  • Injection clinics
  • A Consultant outreach clinic at Fakenham Medical Centre
  • A Consultant and specialist nurse clinic in Wisbech

The Rheumatology team

Consultants:

Your consultant will:

  • Carry out a thorough examination and assessment of your symptoms
  • Discuss and explain your symptoms
  • Carry out/refer you for any relevant investigations
  • Suggest an individually tailored treatment plan
  • Communicate with your GP about your further care
  • Liaise with other team members and where appropriate refer to them

Your specialist nurse will:

  • Assess the level of your arthritis and how it is affecting your life
  • Educate you about the medication you have been prescribed and answer questions or concerns that you may have
  • Regularly monitor the effectiveness and/or possible side effects of your medication
  • Communicate with your GP about your further care
  • Liaise with other team members

Physiotherapists:

Occupational Therapists

  • Mrs Lisa Leman

  • Mrs Samantha Lyddiatt

Your Therapists will:

  • Assess how your function is affected
  • Provide condition education, general health advice and answer your questions
  • Work with you to find ways of improving function, managing pain and maintaining independence
  • Discuss continuing meaningful activities such as leisure activities, work and daily tasks
  • Liaise with other team members

The above actions may be achieved by your occupational therapist through condition education, provision of splints for your hands and wrists, relaxation techniques, joint protection education, hand exercises, condition education and addressing specific work issues.

Your physiotherapist may provide advice on specific and general exercises, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, manual therapy techniques, ultrasound, assessment, provision of a walking aid and condition education.

You, the patient, also have an essential role within the team. At every stage of your care you will be offered information and advice to enable you to make the necessary decisions to manage your condition.
