Ophthalmic Surgery

Ophthalmology

If you, a family member, or someone you know is referred for ophthalmic surgery, the chances are that you will meet our friendly multi-disciplinary team.

The Ophthalmology Department have a dedicated theatre within the Arthur Levin Day Surgery Centre at the QEH.

Lead Consultant Ophthalmologist, Mr Byard leads a team of surgeons each with specialist skills, supported by an experienced team of Day Surgery staff.

We offer a high standard and cost effective range of ophthalmic procedures including cataract surgery, vitreo-retinal surgery, glaucoma surgery, ocular plastic and minor eye surgery.

Patients with medical retinal conditions such as Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration, or diabetic eye disease are able to receive Intra-Vitreal Lucentis or Eylea injections which may improve or maintain their sight.
Procedures are performed under local or general anaesthetic in Day Surgery with patients returning home the same day.

We are also able to offer Ophthalmic Surgery with an in-patient stay for those patients who may have complex needs and therefore not be suitable for a day case operation.

We are able to offer intra-vitreal injections at the QEH and also at North Cambridgeshire Hospital, Wisbech. Our aim is to recognise each patient as an individual and not just their 'eye problem.’ By having the flexibility of offering these procedures in either location, we aim to make it easier for you to attend, promoting a less stressful experience.

Since September 2010, our dedicated Vitreo-Retinal service has provided access to surgery for patients who previously would have had to travel to Norwich or Cambridge. We work closely with our Vitreo-Retinal colleagues regionally and nationally; under certain circumstances patients may be asked to attend another hospital for emergency surgery, however follow up appointments are usually able to be arranged at the QEH.

Vision for the future

Our vision for the future is through our patients eyes! To embrace new challenges and stay focused on striving to give our patients the highest standard of care in a safe and comfortable environment, maintaining dignity at all times.
