Telephone: 01553 613878
A Support Officer is available 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday.
There is a 24-hour answer machine if no one is available. Please leave a message and we will return your call as quickly as possible.
The office is situated on the back corridor of the hospital past the Pathology Department. The Volunteer’s Desk at main reception will be happy to give you directions.
When someone dies there are various practical matters that have to be attended to by a relative or friend.
Key things to do. At first the need to register the death, arrange the funeral, deal with insurances, etc can seem very daunting, but there are just two key things that you need to do at first. You need to contact:
The Funeral Director
You can get in touch with a Funeral Director as soon as you like. There is no need to wait until you have paperwork from the hospital or until after a weekend should the death occur then. The sooner you make contact the better, so that you can be given any help and advice you may need.
The Support Officer in the Bereaved Relatives’ Support Office at the hospital will give you the "Medical Certificate of Cause of Death" (Doctor’s Death Certificate) and the belongings of the deceased. They will also be pleased to offer any helpful advice or support that you may need.
Please telephone 01553 613878 on the first working day after the death, in order for the bereaved relative support officer to explain the procedure.
Unfortunately the line can be very busy and staff cannot answer the phone in person if they are with a family. We apologise if you are connected to the answer phone, but please be assured that if you leave your name and contact number we will return your call as soon as possible.
Please do not come to the office without an appointment, as it is unlikely that the certificate will be ready for collection.
Support for those who are hurting:
Along with Age UK Norfolk we offer a Bereavement Support Group here at the hospital. Our group is open to relatives of patients who have passed away during the last 2 years.
We understand that grief can be an isolating experience and one that doesn't fit into a set timetable, we want to help you through this experience.
Join us and other people in your circumstances to make contacts, receive advice and support or just take time away from everyday routines.
Our support group runs fortnightly on a Wednesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm commencing 11 January 2017. We meet in the hospital's Sacred Space and refreshments are provided.
