Essential information

When someone dies there are various practical matters that have to be attended to by a relative or friend.

Key things to do

At first the need to register the death, arrange the funeral, deal with insurances, etc can seem very daunting, but there are just two key things that you need to do at first. You need to contact:

  1. Funeral Director (Undertaker)
  2. Bereaved Relatives’ Support Officer at the Hospital

The Funeral Director

You can get in touch with a Funeral Director as soon as you wish. There is no need to wait until you have paperwork from the hospital, or until after a weekend should the death occur then, The sooner you make contact the better, so that you can be given help and advice regarding the funeral.

The Bereaved Relatives' Support Office:

Please telephone 01553 613878 on the first working day after the death, in order for the Bereaved Relative Support Officer to explain the procedure regarding obtaining the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death and death registration.

Unfortunately the line can be very busy and the Bereaved Relative Support Officer cannot answer the phone in person if they are with a family. We apologise if you are connected to the answerphone, but please be assured if you leave your name and contact number we will return your call as soon as possible.

Please do not come to the office without an appointment, as it is unlikely that the certificate will be ready for collection.
