Medicines in the NHS

Medicines are the most common medical intervention in the NHS, with four million people aged over 65 years taking five or more medicines every day. The NHS spends over £18bn on medicines every year.

We have a process to access the effectiveness of medicines for prescribing at our Drugs and Therapeutics Committee. All approved medicines are on our formulary.
