Diabetes and technology
Technology can help people with diabetes manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels.
Hybrid closed loop technology
Hybrid closed loop (HCL) technology link continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with insulin pump technology to monitor blood glucose and automatically adjust the amount of insulin given through a pump to people living with Type 1 diabetes.
It is available to those who are:
- planning to have a baby or are already pregnant
- have a HbA1c >58mmol/mol
- experiencing disabling hypos
- under 18 years
Currently you are required to count your carbohydrates, but many pumps have built in ways to support you with this.
There is a five-year implementation plan with HCL being rolled out based on need.
We offer the following HCL systems:
Note: The CamAPS FX app with either Dana or YpsoPump are the only ones licensed for using during pregnancy.
I am starting HCL, what do I need to know?
HCL is life-changing, but to support your transition you will be required to do some training.
- Attend a pre-HCL session. This may be a group session at the hospital or with DAFNE online. View the participant workbook.
- Read the training documents for your specific pump before starting use: Medtronic, Omnipod or YpsoPump
- Complete the “Getting read for pump start” section in your participant workbook
- Attend a starting HCL session
- Attend a post-HCL group session
- Attend an optimising HCL session if you feel you would like further support at any time
