Gavin Brooke, Specialist Physiotherapist, Rehabilitation Team

Gavin Brooke

“During my three-month inpatient stay, Gavin consistently went above and beyond to advocate for the medical treatment and management that I needed. His expertise in my condition, and his willingness to share this knowledge with myself and my family, was invaluable in aiding my recovery. Gavin’s ability to understand what I needed to engage in therapy, both physically and psychologically, contributed towards building my trust and engagement with physical rehabilitation.

“Gavin’s commitment to providing support was not limited to just myself; Gavin would regularly ‘check in’ with my close family members to ensure that their wellbeing as caregivers was acknowledged and supported, as well as facilitating joint sessions where he was able to provide my caregivers with practical ways to support my rehabilitation.

“I believe that Gavin’s direct and indirect management of my condition and treatment is a huge contributing factor in how I have recovered – the ability to return to my life as an independent young professional is owed to Gavin.

“Gavin is a credit to QEHKL and Physiotherapists and my family and I will never be able to show the magnitude of our gratitude.”

Rapik Manganaser, F2 – General Medicine

Rapik Manganaser, F2 - General Medicine

“A family member was seen by Dr Manganeser in SDEC after being sent by the GP for urgent investigation. He was reassuring, and kind, and explained what the plan of action was as well as the possible diagnosis. At such a worrying and uncertain time, it was so nice to have someone so understanding and empathetic. He arranged for a bed for an overnight stay and managed to get a scan completed on the same day.

Following admittance to West Raynham the Dr continued to review his condition regularly and chased required scans several times to ensure they happened and to expedite diagnosis and treatment. I was struck by how kind and caring he was, and how he explained everything so thoroughly. He was so down to earth and kept us informed at every turn, he also checked on us every time he walked past and made sure we were ok, constantly putting us at ease and relieving the worry that we had. All drs should be like Rapik, his bedside manner was amazing, and you could tell he loved his job and his patients. Thank you for your care and compassion Rapik, it was so appreciated.”

Melanie Culey, Admissions Clerk

Image of Melanie Culey with certificate for her Living Our Values Award

Massive congratulations to Melanie Culey, Admissions Clerk on winning the Living Our Values Outstanding Contribution Award for July 2025.

The award was presented to Melanie, alongside her nomination which reads:

I’m thrilled to commend this employee to you. Melanie had to inform me my eye procedure this week had to be cancelled due to an equipment failure with no date available when this would be repaired and I could have my urgent treatment. It was my second cancellation and on hearing the news I was completely distraught.

“Melanie was compassionate and empathic, and her approach enabled me to step down from my anger and upset. Basically, her approach calmed me down. She wasn’t patronising at all and demonstrated some sound communication skills. It was almost like she was holding my hand over the telephone. Melanie was accepting of my distress. She was caring and very efficient. And her tenacity in sourcing some sort of resolution was not only effective in securing a positive outcome but was just so reassuring for me.

“Melanie immediately contacted the ophthalmic department and her actions brought about a prompt review of my case file records, a discussion with my consultant and the next day an appointment for an alternative method to deliver the urgent treatment required.

“My vision is possibly at risk and whilst Melanie kept saying she wasn’t clinical her actions have laid the foundations for timely and hopefully a clinically effective outcome. But not just that, my fear of my sight deteriorating further and needing to know what was happening, Melanie remained in touch with me telling me what was going on.

“As a result, I knew that actions (that she initiated) were occurring which further reassured me. Melanie, it seems was in frequent contact with the ophthalmic service and ensured a positive outcome.

“I hope you commend Melanie for going not just the extra mile, or for just doing her job, but the care compassion and efficiency she demonstrated and gave me. Melanie was my advocate, and I am deeply and truly grateful to her. She is an absolute star! Please award her that recognition.

Natalie Taylor, Children’s Oncology Nurse, Community Paediatrics

Natalie Taylor, Community Paediatrics Children’s Oncology Nurse was awarded the latest Outstanding Contribution to Living Our Values Award for “providing the best care” for a young patient.

Natalie’s nomination from the parent of a patient reads:

“I am nominating Nurse Natalie Taylor, for all she has done to support my son and our family through an extremely difficult time of our lives. He was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia in April which is ultimately bone marrow failure and is a life-threatening condition. He required dressing changes, transfusions and he is currently in hospital (Addenbrookes) where he has had chemotherapy and today a stem cell transplant.

“Natalie came into our lives earlier in the year, she is my son’s community nurse and support while under QE hospitals care. Natalie is such a beautiful soul, who has always made sure that my son is getting the best care and the correct support required with his condition. My son has so much trust in Natalie, which is amazing! He always enjoys seeing Natalie and instantly feels at ease if Natalie is in the room with him.

“She has gone above and beyond in supporting me and my partner through this whole process of getting my son better again. Natalie was there to support me with filling in any forms that I needed help with, as well as making sure my son has enough supplies for all his Hickman line dressing changes and ensuring that he always had enough medication at home so we never run out. My son is 7 years old and has autism, he struggles with new people and new situations, but with Natalie he is instantly at ease and relaxed and will open up to Natalie about anything.

“He was scared of seeing the red blood for his transfusions, Natalie made him his own Minecraft inspired pillowcase to hide the blood bag, she done this in her own time to help him feel more at ease and comfortable having red blood transfusions.

“I just want to say the biggest thank you to Natalie!!! She is an absolute superhero – as they say – not all superheroes were capes! Nurses like Natalie should definitely get the recognition that they deserve! THANK YOU, NATALIE!!”

Natalie said “It was a surprise, I know the mum who submitted the nomination and she joked she was going to submit one every month as a thank you for the care I give her son, but I don’t see it as doing anything special. I just see it as doing my job and doing what all of the families that are going through, either a cancer journey or a haematology journey, deserve. I think I treat my patients how I’d want my child to be treated in that situation.”

“I’d just like to say thank you so much for nominating me. It’s been a pleasure to be on your care journey with you.”

Boyana Pedersen, Locum Dermatology Consultant

Congratulations to Locum Dermatology Consultant, Boyana Pedersen who was celebrated this week for her compassion and dedication to empowering patients as she was awarded October’s Outstanding Contribution for Living Our Values Award. Her nomination reads:

“Dr Pedersen constantly strives, with the support of the dermatology team, to treat every patient she sees with compassion, dignity and respect. On numerous occasions after a consultation the patients have remarked how kind and professional she was, and how they have felt properly heard. Often in dermatology, patients live with conditions chronically for years, trying to manage the condition themselves, being physically, emotionally and psychologically drained by it. To have a team and a doctor who are supportive, genuinely interested and motivated to do their best for you makes so much difference. As one example, recently a patient of Dr Pedersen’ s was moved to tears in clinic. He had been trying to manage a rare and painful chronic skin condition for over 20 years. On his most recent appointment he had achieved clear skin, something he never imagined he would be able to do and was overcome with gratitude. Our skin is how we present ourselves to the world. Treating skin disease is not only about the treatment itself but empowering patients to take control of their condition, giving them the support and confidence they need to do it. Dr Pedersen every day demonstrates a high level of care and compassion and is an asset to the team.”

She ensures that their concerns are addressed in the best possible way and that they are left reassured and happy.
“She ensures that the wellness of staff is taken care of. She is one of the few seniors who genuinely care that we are fed and watered and that we are learning on the job as well.
“Above all, many days Dr. Mahilini has had to work through short, staffed nights and still managed to accomplish a great deal. Gemma Mitchell, Housekeeper, Denver Ward

Gemma is always smiling no matter how busy she is and nothing is ever too much trouble.

She is always welcoming to staff and patients and always goes that extra mile to make sure her patients are happy. She also makes sure the patients’ families are ok and always asks me how I am when I come on to the ward. She always has a listening ear if I need one. Nnamdi Obijuru, Physiotherapist (Rehabilitation Team)

Nnamdi Obijuru, Physiotherapist (Rehabilitation Team)

Nnamdi has only been with our team for a short length of time, however he has made an outstanding contribution to our West Dereham Rehab Team.

Nnamdi is extremely knowledgeable and has an amazing way with the elderly patients. He engages at a level that they understand and is so patient, which is vital with our cognitively impaired patients. However, what really makes Nnamdi stand out from the rest, is his ability to act under pressure.

Recently Nnamdi through thorough assessments, has identified two patients who presented with neurological issues which where otherwise missed. The first one resulted in him identifying a spinal injury and he was completely calm, sprang into action to place the patient in spinal precautions to prevent any more damage. The second one resulted in him identifying a stoke and again calmly informed medical team and got patient moved to the stroke ward.

Both of these events showed his amazing knowledge and skills, whilst able to work under pressure in a calm manner. Nnamdi was commended by the medical team and congratulated for these interventions.

Nnamdi is also very approachable and always willing to share his knowledge with our team, help improve our training and understanding. We feel this shows his complete dedication of care to his patients and displays all 3 of the trust values every day. He is an amazing asset to our team and his infectious personality brightens up our day.

Nnamdi, who was overwhelmed and humbly grateful to receive this award, said: “This means so much to me. I will always do my best for my patients, colleagues and my hospital. I am so grateful to receive this award.”

Nicola Wright and Claire Burrell – Play Specialists on Rudham Ward

Nicola Wright and Claire Burrell - Play Specialists on Rudham Ward

‘My Daughter has had to attend Rudham Ward multiple times. Each time she has had to attend I feel personally that without The Play Specialists Claire Burrell and Nicola Wright the times we would have had to attend would have been unbearable and I as a parent simply do not think I could have managed without their support. Their support not only for my Daughter but for myself too. When your child has to have procedures it is not only traumatic for them when they are unaware at a young age but as a parent It can be very difficult too. They have always gone above and beyond, missing their breaks, taking late breaks, going over their working hours just so they could support not only my daughter but me to on the times we have been on Rudham Ward and I have witnessed personally them doing this for many other people too. They are the most compassionate, caring and empathetic people I have ever had the pleasure in meeting. We have had to attend on multiple occasions and on each occasion, they always have the most biggest smiles, caring nature and welcoming arms. My Daughter always talks about Claire and Nicola even when we are not at the hospital, she takes pleasure in letting people know how she named Babies ‘Charlie and Harry’ with you in the play area and that you still carry on the names whilst she’s not there! Claire and Nicola you really have left a long lasting impact on my Daughter I do not even need to say her name as I am 99.9% sure you will know exactly who this is. Chidera Awokeh

“Chidera was on duty when I visited my relative on Acute Medical Unit. I was so impressed with her professionalism and attitude; she was kind and fair to every one of her patients.

“I heard one upset patient being incredibly unpleasant towards her including making personal remarks, shouting and swearing. Despite this she carried on with the same kind demeanour towards this patient even while they were being so unkind and insulting.

Well done and thank you for all you do for our patients

Elizabeth Russell, Staff Nurse, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

Elizabeth Russell

‘Elizabeth was on shift when my father was admitted with chest pains. He then had a heart attack while in Same Day Emergency Care and was suffering for two hours before his event ended and he was transferred to Papworth via Ambulance.

‘Elizabeth was by my father’s side throughout and kept him calm, charged his phone ahead of his journey and kept myself and my mother updated. We couldn’t have been more grateful of Elizabeth’s honesty, integrity and how she cared for my Father over those two hours.

‘After having to return to the QEH for another event, my Father visited Elizabeth at the Same Day Emergency Care department to thank her, and they both burst into tears.

‘People like Elizabeth are few and far between, and it is all too easy to put pen to paper to make a complaint, but I firmly believe she should be recognised for her professionalism, and how well she represented the QEH.”

Wah Kai Huy, Porter/security

Wah Kai Huy, Porter/security

‘Kai from the security team supported a young person who attended the QE due to physical health but also struggles with mental health along with having diagnosis of autism.

‘This young person had a bad experience last time due to being restrained. Kai came out to support the patient he was so kind empathic and shows so much compassion and adjustment to the young person’s autism. This is something we don’t see very often but he took his time speaking to the patient to avoid a more severe escalation he spoke in a way that the patient would understand offering a lot of reassurance to not only the young person but the parent too.

‘Amazing work Kai, thank you so much for advocating and supporting this young person in a distressing situation.

Clara Simao, Ward Manager

Clara Simao, Ward Manager

‘Clara is an amazing nurse and manager who always goes above and beyond but I would like to outline a specific example of when her kindness and compassion shone through.

‘There was a recent patient on Elm ward who was Portuguese and found speaking English very challenging. Clara spent a lot of time with the patient speaking in Portuguese to assist in his care delivery and nutritional intake. Her interactions made a huge difference to the patient and helped them to not feel isolated on the ward.

‘The patient was there for a long period of time and sadly they were put on the end-of-life pathway. Clara again went above and beyond and contacted the patient’s son in Portugal and talked him through the current situation and tried to assist in deciding when the right time to come and visit would be. This led to him arriving in the country in time to be with his father when he died. Clara was also here when he came and spent time with them both supporting with communication and providing the care he required. The family expressed their huge gratitude for her kindness.

‘Clara’s actions made an immense difference to this patient and his family and made a very difficult time for them all easier to come to terms with. It was also at a time where Clara had recent personal challenges which for some would have made the actions she took impossible but she showed amazing strength and courage and still gave this family the best experience possible. I am very proud to work with Clara and to have witnessed such amazing care.”

September

Gemma is very passionate about her patients and has their best interest at all times. Her recent act of professionalism whilst supporting an elderly lady on Leverington ward, who was experiencing domestic abuse was exceptional and passionate. Gemma went above and beyond to support and ensure this lady had a safe discharge and place to live. Despite the red tapes, Gemma persevered to support this lady through external agencies. Well done.

Gill Skipper, Senior Stoma Care Specialist Nurse

Gill Skipper, Senior Stoma Care Specialist Nurse

Gill is a stoma specialist nurse within surgery but works trust wide to support all patients with a stoma or preparing them for surgery. We had feedback from the Head of Nursing for medicine regarding a very complex young patient that had been under their care and was being prepared for surgery with a resulting stoma. The patient and their family had been incredibly anxious about the impact on their quality of life and hobbies etc. Gill went out of her way to contact a previous patient who had also undergone the same surgery and has a stoma at a very young age. She asked them to come in to visit the patients and spend the day with him and his family to show how you can live a great life with a stoma. This was an amazing that she organised and it helped the patient and his family to get a very positive perspective on what was to come in the future. This made such a difference to everyone and meant the patient went for their surgery knowing so much more about the potential outcome and what his future will hold. Gill went over and above in her role here to deliver amazing care to her patient. The family and all staff involved have passed their thanks on for making something very traumatic into a more positive experience.

Mark Collins, Moving & Handling Facilitator

Mark Collins

“Mark went above and beyond to ensure the safety and wellbeing of a colleague. A colleague had not arrived to work and was not contactable, as this was highly out of character Mark made contact with the member of staff and alerted the ambulance. This is typical of Mark’s personality, he cares deeply about his colleagues and is passionate about his work. He lives the QEH values and has demonstrated this multiple times.”

“A few of us tend to be in the office in the early morning. But this morning one of our usual suspects was not. Mark asked if anyone had heard from our friend and colleague. No, we hadn’t. When they were 15 minutes late, he worried. At 30 minutes late he phoned them. No answer. Then phoned again. Still no answer. Then asked if anyone had seen them or heard from them? No. Then knowing they were alone at home in a rural setting decided to go and see if they were OK. There was some detective work to find her address, and then having secured someone to cover his training session set off to find them. When he arrived, he found a very poorly colleague all alone and called an ambulance. He kept us updated in the office and waited for the ambulance to arrive. He followed the ambulance back to the hospital and managed to speak to their next of kin. And then he calmly sat back down at his desk and carried on his work. He was assisted by those of us that could offer help but his efforts and listening to his gut feeling that something was wrong was heroic. Thanks Mark. Kindness and wellness in abundance.”

“This week one of our colleagues did not show up to work. No messages had been received from them and after numerous attempts in trying to contacting them without success Mark decided to travel to their home to check on them. On arrival, he found the staff member in need of an ambulance. After much searching, Mark was able to speak to a relative and he then returned to QEH to speak to the staff member’s partner who was an in-patient at that time. Mark displayed compassionate, concern for his fellow work colleague and went above and beyond. I cannot think of anyone more deserving than nominating Mark to show what a wonderful individual and colleague he is.”
