Case study

The first Green Champion session took place in March 2024, with two champions appointed initially and seven more joining in April 2024.

The Trust aims to have a champion in every ward and department by the end of March 2025.

The Catering department is procuring a food digester to reduce food waste by approximately 80%, turning waste into compost for bio-fuels and reducing emissions from daily waste collection.

The Trust is also working with MobilityWays to support car sharing, offering reduced parking and dedicated spaces for those who share rides outside their family.

Actions taken

The Trust has reduced carbon emissions by installing over 90% LED lighting, achieving 50% energy savings and financial savings of £224,000 per annum.

Recycling has increased by 19%, with 8.5 tonnes of recycled waste produced in February 2025. Food digesters are now in place, allowing effective management of food waste.

The Trust has promoted sustainable travel, with over 350 staff members interested in car sharing, and partnered with DASH to support cycling to work.

The number of Green Champions has grown to 14, with ongoing efforts to increase this number.
