Apply to become a volunteer
There are five steps to becoming a QEH volunteer. For all roles you will need to have the right to work in the UK to volunteer at QEH.
- Complete the application
- Informal interview
- Recruitment checks
- Induction training
- Start volunteering
Please complete the application form with as much detail as possible. This will help us consider if we have an opportunity that is a good match for your interests, skills, and personality. Please also remember to include your availability. You must be over the age of 18 to volunteer in patient facing roles, and a minimum age of 17 to volunteer in general (with a signed parental consent form).
Once we have received your application form, we will give you a call and invite you to an informal meeting. This will enable you to find out more about volunteering with team QEH and for us to find out a bit more about you.
We are on hand to guide you through the process of verifying identity documents, checking references, completing an occupational health check and a disclosure and barring service check.
All volunteers are required to undertake an induction programme. This covers all the training that volunteers need before starting their placements. Induction helps to prepare volunteers for the hospital environment and establishes the boundaries between staff and volunteer roles.
Some of our roles require additional training, such as computer access or wheelchair training. The team will explain this to you as you go through the application process.
After your induction, the team will arrange your uniform, ID badge and parking (as needed). We will buddy you with one of our experienced volunteers who will show you the ropes. Once you’re confident in your duties we can get you settled into your regular volunteering day and time. The team are always on hand for support and guidance, along with the staff in your placement area. We all want you to get the most out of your time volunteering with us.

If you have any difficulties completing our online application form, contact Voluntary Services on 01553 613205 and one of the team will send out an application pack by email or post.
Please note that for all our volunteer roles, recruitment and training sessions take place during normal working hours on weekdays. Evening and weekend volunteering may be possible after successful completion of the recruitment process. Please use the space on the application form to include your availability for volunteering.
