Find out about our proposals for a new multi-storey car park at QEH and hear about our plans for a new hospital

The car park engagement has now closed.

The information on this page is about proposals to build a new multi-storey car park. Between Tuesday 30 August to and Sunday 11 September 2022 we held an engagement period on these proposals. The engagement period has now ended. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to get involved and share their views

As you will understand, we took the decision to postpone two of our public events following the sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We will contact those registered to attend with details of the re-scheduled events.

Over the coming months we will publish a report, summarising the feedback and detailing how we have responded to the views we have heard. The report, and any further updates about the car park will be available on our website.

About our plans for a new car park

The buildings that make up QEH are at the end of their life. We now have more than 1,500 steel and timber support props in 56 areas of the hospital. This is almost three times more props than beds and we are the most propped hospital in the country.

A new hospital is the only solution. We need to secure around 862m of capital funding and are currently being considered for funding under the Government's New Hospital Programme. To secure the funding, we must show that we are 'investment ready' - meaning we are in a position to move forward with a new build quickly. Part of this means demonstrating that we have plans in place to address any disruption that a major build on our existing site could bring by ensuring the development zone for the new build is free to be developed quickly.

A particular focus for us has been how we provide adequate car parking both during the building works and once the new hospital is open.
