Oral and maxillofacial surgery is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

The oral and maxillofacial surgery department offers extensive services relating to conditions of the head, neck and mouth.

Working closely with Norfolk and Norwich University hospital our Oral Surgery department deals with a range of conditions, including: trauma to the face and jaws, head and neck infections, various cancers of the head and neck, salivary gland diseases, jaw joint conditions, facial pain, removal of heavily decayed or wisdom teeth, cysts and tumors of the jaw and severe oral ulceration. It offers services to both adult and pediatric patients.

The oral surgery department will assess and manage complicated wisdom tooth problems, tooth root (apical) surgery, manage acute and chronic dental infections, manage jaw cysts and facial pain. We also treat patients requiring treatment, but with significant medical problems that may complicate their care.

The department will first provide a Consultant led clinic for diagnostic investigation. Onward management of patients with cancer is achieved via our networked links with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Addenbrooks Hospital, Cambridge.

The team work closely with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Dermatology, Orthodontics, Ophthalmology, the day surgery unit and Accident and Emergency departments to ensure integrated care.

We provide both elective and emergency treatments under local anesthetic, local anesthetic and intravenous sedation and under a general anesthetic. We will always aim to provide any treatment at your local hospital.

Our services are provided in our outpatient’s facilities, these are situated on the ground floor of the hospital in reception area 3 (see map). The team also hold outpatient clinics at the North Cambridgeshire Hospital in Wisbech.

The team provide an on call service for emergencies Monday to Friday, from 8.30am until 5.30pm.

From 5.30pm every day, over the weekend and bank holidays emergency specialist cover is provided by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
