Work experience leads to audiology career for Sam

Sam Greenwood

A former student who was so fascinated by his two weeks work experience with the Audiology team at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital that he went on to take a degree in the subject, is back at the QEH - working as a professional audiologist.

Sam Greenwood (23), who lives in Walpole St Peter, will be working in the Audiology Department at the QEH until September, when he joins a private practice in Norfolk.

His remarkable career achievement started around five years ago when he was studying Health and Social Care at The College of West Anglia.

For his two-week work placement he chose Audiology at The QEH – prompted by the fact that his 13-year old sister Hattie is profoundly deaf and now hears thanks to an implant.

He said: “After that I went back to college to complete my course but then I decided I wanted to follow a career in audiology, so was accepted by the University of Southampton for a degree course, which I completed with a 2:1.

“I was the first student they had ever had in the Audiology Department at the hospital, so I feel my achievement is a credit to the whole team. Everyone was very supportive and made me feel very welcome.”

So pleased were the Audiology team with Sam’s achievement that they offered him temporary work over the summer until he begins his new job in September.

QEH Audiology Services Manager Mark Brindle said: “Sam spent some months with us on placement while undertaking his degree course. His achievement has been remarkable and we are fortunate to have him back working here over the summer. He has a great career ahead of him.”

So what would Sam have been doing if he hadn’t found his calling in audiology? He said: “I like to think I would have been a rugby player – but I think I have made the right career choice!”
