Vilius Savickus

Lead Pharmacist in our Medicine Division

Vilius Savickus

Vilius is our Lead Pharmacist in the Medicine Division at QEH. He told us:

“Career progression is central to our vision as a department: we support our junior staff in their development, whether that’s supporting them in their clinical diplomas or certificates of independent prescribing, to helping them develop into more specialist practitioners. Moving up the ladder probably happens faster here than at many university hospitals or larger organisations – you’re given more responsibility at the start and you’re able to progress more quickly.

“We’re well known for – and very proud of – how much working at QEH, and within pharmacy itself, feels like a family. We’re a very friendly department and a very supportive team. We might be a relatively small hospital, but we think big, and we’re a very forward-thinking organisation and department.

“We’re constantly looking at how to develop and further improve our services, while also making sure we look after our staff, train and support them – whether that’s with clinical courses or leadership training. We’re keen to see people develop: not just in their particular roles, but as practitioners and as people.

“We’re always keen to hear new ideas and challenge our ways of working and thinking, so it’s a great place to join, share new ideas, be listened to and know that your feedback will be taken onboard.

“We work extremely closely with our colleagues across the whole QEH team – doctors, nurses, allied health professionals like physios and occupational therapists and more – to make sure that our patients receive the best possible care on our wards. We have electronic prescribing, which helps us to prioritise and see, immediately, which of our patients are on any high-risk medications and discuss options and treatments accordingly.

“The teamwork aspect is especially true when patients leave hospital – we all work together to make sure they have everything they need and are as well supported as possible to continue their recovery at home.”

“Our pharmacy team is incredibly diverse: we have colleagues from a whole range of nationalities, backgrounds and cultures. It really brings different ideas into play when people see the same problem from different backgrounds and from different angles. Combining those viewpoints really helps us drive improvements to our quality, our services and our patient care. We really cherish it.

“I’ve only been here 18 months and I feel I know so many people already, from matrons to senior leaders. It really is fantastic to feel part of a family where everyone is committed to making sure we give our patients the very best care. It makes everything so much smoother and easier.

“King’s Lynn is in such an excellent location for having a great social life too – it’s close to Sandringham and the famous beaches and tourist attractions of north Norfolk. The town itself has some great restaurants and good shopping too, and it’s only a few hours from London or the Midlands if you want to go further afield.”
