Meet our teams

Shirley started in our radiography team at QEH as an admin assistant and has since progressed through the ranks and a university degree to starting as a radiographer.

She spoke to us about life at QEH since she joined six years ago, and why she’s keen to further her learning at postgraduate level:

“I started as in admin here in the radiology department before becoming a clinical support worker. Then I did my degree and now I’m a radiographer.

“The QEH has great opportunities – it’s good for progressing and the sky’s the limit basically. You go where you want to go at your own pace. I did my degree at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich. 60 per cent was based here at QEH and 40 per cent was at the university.

“I’ve been at QEH for about six years, so they’ve helped with my learning and teaching throughout my degree, and then offered me a job here after my degree.

“I find that hands on experience is the best way of learning for me, and because my learning was through COVID at the beginning, it was very intense. I faced a lot of different situations, but it was all a learning curve, and I had a lot of support.

“It’s a family environment at QEH, so you’re all going through it together. It was actually them who suggested I further my learning by studying a postgraduate degree in paediatric imaging.

“It won’t just benefit me – it’ll benefit the whole department immensely, it’s something we don’t have at the moment, so it’s a winner for all of us. I’m also looking at hopefully doing a postgraduate degree in ultrasound too.

“I would say that my career choice was a great opportunity. No two days are ever the same – you see different things, meet different people, it’s never boring. I’d recommend it immensely.”
