Lillie Williams

Delivery Suite Co-ordinator

Lillie Williams

Lillie Williams is a Delivery Suite Co-ordinator in the Maternity Unit at QEH. She talked to us about how she knew she wanted to be a midwife since she was a teenager:

“I was at home when my little sister was born at home – she and the family were looked after by some Downham team midwives and I just thought, what a job! Go into someone’s house, who has a new baby, look after them… I think that’s just incredible. It was so nice. It was so chilled. We sat and had cups of tea with the midwives afterwards and I just thought, that’s what I want to do.

“So, little old 15-year-old me went on to do my A-levels and I’ve never looked back, really.

“I came into it quite young: I was 18 when I started, the youngest in my year. I did my training in London and then got my preceptorship here at QEH and started working here straightaway. I worked my way up from Band 5 to Band 6, and then got my Band 7 [different levels of roles within NHS organisations].

“I did a development role to get into the position I’m in now, which was a year of support basically, in order to get this co-ordinator job.

“Everyone helped so much. I got put on some extra courses within the Trust and even now I’m still doing leadership courses. It’s one thing being a senior midwife, it’s another thing being their manager.

“QEH is like my second home. Ideally, I’d like to be a ward manager one day – I’m not ready for that yet, I’d still like more experience under my belt.

“But I never see me leaving here.”
