Infection prevention and control
Our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Team consists of specialist nurses, a support worker and a team co-ordinator who work with consultant microbiologists, specialist antimicrobial pharmacists, and a director of IPC.
Infection prevention and control is central to safe patient care and to that extent it becomes everyone's responsibility. Therefore, we have a highly visible role working across the Trust, being committed to reducing the risks of anyone acquiring a healthcare associated infection. We work closely with the wards, departments and all staff providing specialist guidance and advice; working hard to ensure our hospital keeps infection rates to the absolute minimum and ensuring IPC is integral to everyone's working practices.
We also conduct:
- Staff education and training
- Promotion of IPC awareness campaigns
- Surveillance of specific healthcare acquired infections such as MRSA and E. coli blood-stream infections and Clostridium difficile infections
- Investigating outbreaks and co-ordinating control measures
- Continued audit of IPC practice
- Ensuring the Trust is working to the most current standards and with the most up-to-date information available.
