Rehabilitation services - pain management

The Pain Management Team assesses patients affected by longstanding pain lasting more than three months including those with complex medical, psychological and/or social needs. We work as a multi-disciplinary team, members include:

  • Consultants in Pain Management
  • Specialist Pain Nurse
  • Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist

Using a patient centered approach we frequently coordinate joint assessments for two or more members of the team to meet with a patient.

All patients are first assessed by a Pain Consultant and following this appointment they may be referred to therapy including Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. We offer patients a combination of educational/ advice classes and individual treatment aimed at:

  1. Promoting self management
  2. Improving their coping strategies
  3. Showing patients how to regain their independence
  4. Ultimately enhancing their quality of life

Treatments include; education, graded exercise, vocational rehabilitation, cognitive behavioral therapy, advice, TENS, acupuncture, graded motor imagery, back class, hydrotherapy. Access to Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy for these specialised treatments is available to those who have first been referred by their GP or Consultant to the Pain Management Team.
