What is Neurology?
Neurology is a branch of medical science that is concerned with disorders and diseases of the nervous system.
This field enables diagnosis and treatment of conditions and diseases that involve the central and peripheral nervous system (including the autonomic nervous system).
Our Neurology department
Our department undertakes the diagnosis and treatment of headaches, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), movement disorders (including Parkinson’s and tremor), memory problems and neuro-muscular disorders. Our main role is in the outpatient investigation and care of patients with these conditions, but we also help to look after inpatients with various neurological symptoms and presentations. Many investigations are provided on site, but we also link to our tertiary centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for complex cases.
Our sub-specialist services include clinics that manage patients with long-term neurological conditions:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Other movement disorders, including dystonias (Botulinum toxin clinic)
- Motor neuron disease
- Myasthenia gravis, muscle disorders and neuropathies
- Chronic migraine
Some of these services operate as separate clinics; others are within ‘general neurology’ clinics. All clinics liaise closely with general practice, and with community neurology services – including community therapy services (e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy).
Neurology also offers a range of diagnostic procedures, including:
