General Surgery
Main Theatres is a unit of six elective theatres, one emergency theatre, an eightbay recovery area (including a dedicated paediatric bay) and a 14-bed Surgical Extended Recovery Unit (SERU).
We would usually carry out around 400 elective (planned) and 200 emergency procedures a month.
Our emergency theatre provides a 24-hoursa-day service. We are a team of 12 General Surgery Consultants, 12 Middle Grade Surgeons, 18 Junior Doctors and Specialist Nurses and Therapists, such as Cancer specialists, Stoma Nurses, Dieticians and Physiotherapists.
Our Surgical Extended Recovery Unit (SERU) provides care for patients after their operations and allows them to return home as soon as they have recovered from their anaesthetic.
We care for adults and children in areas including:
Our skilled and highly specialised orthopaedic team aims to treat all patients who have suffered a broken hip (Fractured Neck of Femur) as quickly as possible and if we are not able to operate on the same day we will ensure they are first on the list to be seen by a Surgeon and Anaesthetist the following day.
The Surgical Extended Recovery Unit has allowed us to discharge patients safely and more effectively, reducing unnecessary overnight stays. This also means we are able to run our Main Theatres more efficiently and frees up hospital beds in other parts of the hospital.
We encourage our staff to take up education and training opportunities to progress their careers, with staff undertaking NVQs and Advanced Scrub Practitioner and Nursing Foundation degree courses. We also have a strong track record of our mentors and practice supervisors supporting Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs), Paramedic, Medical and Nursing students.
