Fundraising Campaign: Dementia Care AppealImage text: QEH King's Lynn Charity - Dementia Care Appeal

Thanks to the incredible generosity of local people, businesses and communities, just over £100,000 has been raised in the two-phase appeal which launched in January 2022.

Phase One: Activities and Equipment

In the first phase of the appeal, we purchased various pieces of equipment to help our patients living with dementia. This includes activity packs, calendar clocks and Reminiscent Interactive Therapy and Activity computer systems (or RITA).

The dementia-friendly activity packs include games, reminiscence cards and jigsaw puzzles, which can entertain, boost confidence and encourage independence in our patients.

We have also displayed all 18 adult wards with dementia-friendly calendar clocks which can reduce confusion and support patients living with dementia to easily access the day, date and time.

Our RITA computer systems can reduce confusion and boredom whilst also entertaining patients living with dementia. This computer system allows patients to engage in activities on their own or for the entire ward. Activities include karaoke, bingo, virtual colouring, and many more.

Phase Two: Exercise Therapy

Exercise therapy can enhance quality of life and have a positive impact on not only the patient, but their family and carers. The qualified therapists have the best skillset to provide stimulating care for our patients.

Therapists from Exercising People In Communities (EPIC) Norfolk, a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people through physical activity opportunities, will be deployed on wards twice a week.

The therapists are scheduled to carry out a mix of one-to-one sessions, group seated exercises, and sports exercises such as bowling. These group sessions will encourage interaction and socialising with others.

Thank you

By providing activities, equipment and exercise therapy to our patients living with dementia, they will be able to feel more at ease during their hospital stay.

Pippa Street, Chief Nurse at QEH, said: “We are extremely grateful to both Kenneth Bush Solicitors and Your Local Paper, and our local communities, for supporting this important appeal. This will enable us to make significant improvements at QEH and make further strides to improving the care and wellbeing of our patients living with dementia.”

For those living with dementia a hospital stay can be especially daunting, but thanks you to, we have managed to create a more comfortable environment during their stay at QEH. Thank you.
