Otology and Audiology
The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department, in conjunction with the department of Audiology, is able to provide services in the investigation, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of both adults and children with hearing and balance disorders; diseases of the external ear, middle ear and mastoid. Services offered at the QEH include:
Hearing
- Newborn hearing screening programme and diagnostic assessment of referrals
- Assessment and referral of patients for cochlear implant via networked links to Addenbrookes hospital, Cambridge
- Diagnostic assessment and rehabilitation of patients hearing loss with hearing aids
- Hearing therapy for patients with tinnitus and hyperacusis
- Aural toilet clinics for conditions of the external ear
Balance
- Diagnostic assessment of dizzy patients
- Vestibular function testing
- Vestibular rehabilitation therapy
Operations
- Grommet insertion
- Tympanoplasty for perforations in the ear drum
- Ossiculoplasty
- Middle ear and mastoid surgery for cholesteatoma
Following the appointment of Mr Beynon-Phillips who has sub-specialty interest and training in complex middle ear and mastoid surgery, it is hoped we will expand the range of otological procedures that may be performed at QEH to include:
- Bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA) assessment, surgery and fitting
- Bone Bridge assessment, surgery and fitting
- Stapedotomy for otosclerosis

Your consultant will provide a detailed explanation of your condition or details of any planned surgery in order to obtain your consent to undergo a procedure. You should feel free to ask any questions you may have about the condition or procedure. Post operative emergencies
In the event of a problem in the post operative period, you should contact the ENT office on 01553 613724 or 01553 613686. Out of hours emergencies may require attendance at the A and E department which will refer you to the on-call ENT team if necessary.
