LAMP COVID-19 testing

Evidence has shown that people infected with COVID-19 can have no symptoms and still transmit the virus to others without being aware. It is important that we take steps to reduce the risk of transmission by identifying those who may not know they have the virus and therefore staff without symptoms will be tested. In order to identify that staffs that are asymptomatic, lateral flow testing was implemented for staff, as new technologies have now come on line we have been asked to implement LAMP testing for asymptomatic staff.

LAMP stands for ‘loop mediated isothermal amplification’, which is quicker that the usual PCR swab tests and can be done at greater volume. The test identifies the active replication of the COVID virus.
Some NHS services have already used this approach to identify asymptomatic health care workers with the virus. This is now being expanded to all very high risk areas. ONS data suggest that healthcare workers are at greater risk of catching the virus, and not everyone shows symptoms. Detecting positive cases sooner reduces the risk of the virus being passed on to patients, colleagues, and family members and beyond in the community. Weekly testing can detect the great majority of staff who may not know they have the virus and are potentially infectious to others.

Asymptomatic staff testing will initially focus on acute settings with the aim of all front line staff will be tested weekly. The lamp test is not mandatory.

LAMP Process

  • Asymptomatic testing for staff will be undertaken on a weekly basis.
  • Staff should pick up their LAMP kits from their line manager, or directly from Occupational Health
  • Staff will be asked to undertake a saliva specimen first thing in the morning(prior to breakfast, a drink or brushing teeth). You can view a full step-by-step guide here
  • The staff specimen will be dropped off at a dedicated drop off point before 1.30pm. The three drop-off points are the large red containers situated in the main entrance, in front of Critical Care and next to Occupational Health
  • The staff member will then register the sample on the app
  • Samples will be collected and transferred to the laboratory at the Norfolk and Norwich.
  • Staff will be notified by text of the result within 24 hours
  • Occupational health will be notified of positive results.
  • If a person tests positive they can begin retaking the lamp test after 14 days.

For more information, please email or view this leaflet.

You can view a short video on LAMP testing by JPUH here.

A PCR test will not be required to confirm positive test.
